Vermont Special Education Regulations Survey Results

Comments made by Parents to a Survey Regarding the Proposed Special Education Regulations,
Submitted April 4, 2006

SECTION 1: DEFINITIONS

→ Scientifically-Based Research; Peer Reviewed Research

The new IDEA requires the use of teaching methods that are scientifically-based, research-based and/or peer-reviewed research when teaching children with disabilities, wherever practicable.

Should the Vermont Department of Education maintain a list of professionals who are knowledgeable in these instructional methods and offer parents and schools training on the various methods?

Yes: 51 No: 3 Don't Know: 5

Comments:

This would be wonderful. Not only would SPED kids get better programs but all other children would benefit too.

Continuing education is needed by all teachers and new methods/practices should be shared, taught and offered to schools on a regular basis. (Yearly at convention?)

Once again, the Dept. of Education needs to be an accessible resource to educators in the field.

This seems like advertising for certain professionals as well as creating the illusion that these methods are all there is that is of value. Clearly, the research isn't adequate to make that claim.

The list should be updated each year as names and addresses change. Parents have enough daily challenges. The Department of Education should be accountable for the accuracy of the listing.

Yes, this is an area that is sorely lacking.

But it should not be a requirement that schools use certain programs or consultants.

Training parents would be fantastic! (teachers, too)

Training for the personnel working with a special needs child is critical

The schools can need knowledge and support to implement effective methods.

That would be great for many small rural schools

How would this list be kept current?

Absolutely. This is VERMONT! This should be not only on a website, but definitely this needs to happen!

Training and/or information in easy to understand terms.

We as parents are frantically seeking information from knowledgeable teachers.

This is a "qualified" yes with reservation. How will these individuals be deemed "professional"? For instance, I am knowledgeable, have certificates and specialized training but don't have a VT state teaching license. Am I a professional? Are VPIC's family consultants professionals? I believe so, but will the dept. developing the list?

Go beyond knowledgeable . They can be evaluated on their skill level too.

Yes. If the DOE requires research-based practices, they need to provide training to schools on these interventions.

It is EXTREMELY important that both parents and school personnel be properly trained! And the parents should be included so they can help @ home and know what's going on @ school.

Yes, but we must be careful to include all best practice methods. And provide training for special ed teachers and para professionals in the method chosen for each individual child.
