Volunteer Programs

With the help of volunteers, the Vermont Parent Information Center reaches out to families in their communities, to legislators and educators with three distinct programs: Community Volunteers, Parents as Faculty and Legislative Network.

Our Community Volunteer Program helps VPIC reach and serve families close to home. After receiving twelve hours of training, offered twice a year at two-day workshops, volunteers support families locally, providing information about community resources, disabilities, and education programs. They provide emotional support and help families understand their rights. Volunteers are most often parents themselves or individuals who have an interest in supporting children and their families.

Legislative Network volunteers help VPIC advocate to improve services and systems for children with special needs and their families. Volunteers call, write or meet with legislators and policy makers. Volunteers include parents, educators and service providers who have a strong interest in the welfare of children with special needs.

With Saint Michael's College, we sponsor a Parents as Faculty Program. Graduate students in special education are matched with families for a 12-hour experience in which they learn about parenting a child with special needs and how to work in partnership with families. Parents also speak at college classes.
